Opinions Vary: Summer Movies Should Be More Than Fleeting Entertainment
[Caff note: Pacific Rim spoilers in here.]
I. Preamble
One of the neat things about such a small, tight-knit community is that narratives can begin to grasp hold. Throughout this very summer, the lot of us have discussed the latest crop of Whiz-Bang Hollywood Fecaltainment. As the movies have arrived, we have all received them in a variety of manners.
More than anything, I think I could be typified as generally disappointed by this latest crop. As movie after movie has been released I have been somewhat entertained. But for the most part, I have found them to be ephemeral, forgettable piles of crap.
Butting heads with even my own brother who (whom?) I typically see eye-to-eye with, I began to ask myself why I’ve been so disappointed. I figured I’d use this Opinions Vary to articulate my feelings. Namely, that this summer’s blockbusters have been bereft of Goosebump Moments, and that I don’t (and shouldn’t) accept middling efforts when this very genre is capable of capstone experiences and inspirational wankery.
‘IRON MAN 3’ TV Clip: Tony’s latest egotism is giving away his home address
The latest clip from Iron Man 3 has Tony Stark giving away his home address to The Mandarin. Pretty much exactly the sort of thoughtless, boisterous nonsense you’d get from an egomaniac. Here’s hoping the movie makes him feel the repercussions.
‘IRON MAN 3’: Four new photos, including a damsel in distress.
Don’t forget about Iron Man 3! Even though it is a ways off, that doesn’t mean you need to have perspective. Leave that nonsense in the trash along with your common sense, and get overly stoked for a film that won’t be arriving until past the Winter’s last bite.
‘IRON MAN 3’ TEASER TRAILER: It’s totally extremis!
Shit man, it’s Sunday. I’m not supposed to be hustling about posting things. Here, have an Iron Man 3 teaser trailer. Real jam drops on Tuesday.
Oh snap! ‘IRON MAN 3’ ARMOR REVEALED at SDCC. It’s…Different.
You want a look at Tony Stark’s newest (techno-organic?) armor from Iron Man 3? Of course you do.
‘IRON MAN 3’ CONCEPT Art is Totally EXTREMIS! Get It? I Know, I Know.
I don’t know why anyone is acting like they don’t totally know that Iron Man 3’s plot is going to be centered around the “Extremis” storyline by Warren Ellis. Lest you remain unconvinced, check out this concept art.
First Official ‘IRON MAN 3’ Image Has Tony Contemplating Toys of Death
Golly gosh gee wowie! It’s the first official image from Iron Man 3. Snark aside, I’m really looking forward to this flick. The pairing once again of RDJ and Shane Black. The sloughing off of the Avengers tie-ins. It should be a good coda for the first Anthony Stark trilogy.

James Badge Dale Signs On To ‘IRON MAN 3’ As Villain. I’ll Take It.
James Badge Dale has held it down on a lot of works, but I liked him the most in the ill-fated Rubicon. Since AMC nixed it, while perpetuating slop like Walking Dead, and Kevin Smith’s Fat Zany Adventure, I’ve been rooting for everyone involved in the submarined television show, especially the lead. Casting him in Iron Man 3 is a particularly delicious development, for this really drawn out reason.
