Andy Serkis rumored to be in ‘The Batman’ which would be pretty fucking cool, honestly
The rumor! Andy Serkis is going to be in The Batman. The take! I dig it. Especially given his already-established relationship with director Matt Reeves.
Movie Web:
We’ve got a tantalizing new rumor regarding Matt Reeves’ The Batman, and it involves Andy Serkis. For the time being, we’re probably going to have to deal with mostly rumors until Warner Bros. actually gets a little closer to production on the movie. We did recently learn, after a great deal of runaround, that Robert Pattinson is indeed going to be our new caped crusader. But who is he going to be duking it out against? Well, if this new rumor has any credibility to it, Serkis may factor into that equation.
Again, before diving in we must caution this is just a rumor for the time being, albeit a believable one. That said, this shouldn’t be regarded as any sort of confirmation. With that having been said, a new report claims that two independent sources are saying Andy Serkis, best known for his motion capture work for characters such as Gollum in Lord of the Rings, is being considered for a role in The Batman. There is no indication at this time as to who Serkis might play, should this come to pass.
If we allow for some speculation, director Matt Reeves plans to use several key members of Batman’s rogues gallery in the movie. We know that for sure. It’s been reported multiple times that one of those villains will be The Penguin. Other villains said to be in the mix include Catwoman and The Riddler. Josh Gad recently took himself out of the running to play Penguin, after much teasing online. With that in mind, Andy Serkis seems like someone who would make a damn fine Oswald Cobblepot. Again, that’s purely speculative but it’s not at all hard to imagine.
While this is just a rumor for now, let’s look at why this may turn out to be more. Matt Reeves has an outstanding working relationship with Andy Serkis. The actor played Caesar in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes. Both of which were directed by Reeves and both of which were met with widespread critical acclaim and box office success. Directors tend to enjoy working with actors that they’ve had successful creative collaborations with in the past. And Serkis is a wholly unique talent that literally every studio in town wants to work with. So Warner Bros. would surely sign off on this.
Here’s what we know for sure. Pre-production is expected to begin before year’s end, with filming set to get underway early next year. While full plot details are being kept under wraps, it’s said that this will showcase Bruce Wayne’s skills as a detective, more so than his ability to kick the crap out of bad guys, in a noir tale. With that in mind, we should hear some official word regarding further casting before the end of the year. The Batman is set to arrive in theaters on June 25, 2021.
