Rumor: The ‘Star Wars’ movie by ‘Game of Thrones’ creators filming this fall and explores the Old Republic. Hell. Fucking Yes.
I’m ready for some fucking Star Wars outside the Skywalker Saga, folks. And if this rumor is true, the Game of Thrones creators are going to be the ones giving it to me. I mean, the Old Republic? Hell yes.
CBR:
Swapping the Seven Kingdoms of Game of Thrones for that galaxy far, far away, directors David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are rumored to start filming their Star Wars universe movie this fall.
According to Star Wars News Net’s source, Benioff and Weiss will set the first of their movies in the Old Republic. There is no official confirmation of this from Benioff and Weiss, though, so it’s best to take this rumor with a grain of salt for now.
According to the report, “Disney wants to open up the Star Wars timeline and appeal to a more Game of Thrones style audience.” The pair have made a name for themselves as showrunners for the mega-popular HBO series. With Benioff and Weiss concluding their run on Game of Thrones in May and sitting out Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin’s prequel series, 2019 would make sense as a start date for their first Star Wars movie.
Considering the popularity of BioWare and Obsidian’s various Knights of the Old Republic games, it would be a shrewd move for Disney to chart this untapped era. However, critics only have to look at the polarizing reception of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and box office disappointment of Solo: A Star Wars Story to see it could be a risky gamble.
Judging by their work on Game of Thrones, Benioff and Weiss have experience handling expansive mythology. If they can deliver on the hopes of a story that is described as “Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings,” the first entry could silence even the most vocal critics of Disney’s sci-fi series.
