Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, creators of the BBC’s Sherlock, are trading the consulting detective for Count Dracula himself, as they take on Bram Stoker’s classic vampire novel. The miniseries will be written and created by the duo and follow the same format as Sherlock with three 90-minute episodes.
Netflix announced that, while the series will air on BBC One in the United Kingdom and Ireland, the streaming service would handle the U.S. and other international distribution. Gatiss and Moffat have been associated with a Dracula project produced by Hartswood Films since June 2017, but this is the first real news of the project since then.
Dracula will take place in 1897 and focus on the Transylvanian count’s plans to take over Victorian London. According to the Netflix press release, it’s time for the world to be re-introduced to “the vampire who made evil sexy.”
“There have always been stories about great evil,” Gatiss and Moffat said in the press release about the upcoming mini-series. “What’s special about Dracula, is that Bram Stoker gave evil its own hero.”
This will be the duo’s first collaboration since Sherlock wrapped up its fourth season in 2017. Sherlock is most known for launching Benedict Cumberbatch into the international eye.
