‘Venom’ Trailer: Well, I hope Sony is playing the long game with this movie

Hey! It’s the Venom trailer! Without Venom! The majority of people I’ve talked to about the Venom trailer are shrugging at best. I can get not wanting to give an enormous glimpse at the titular symbiote in the first trailer, but, man. This trailer a resounding yawn.

Nearly a month after the release of the first, clue-filled image from Venom, Sony Pictures has debuted a teaser trailer for the Spider-Man spinoff.

Tom Hardy stars as Eddie Brock, who in Marvel Comics lore is a disgraced journalist who becomes host to an alien Symbiote, which transforms him into Venom, the wildly popular supervillain turned, in more recent decades, antihero. Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), Venom draws its primary inspirations from the 1993 miniseries Venom: Lethal Protector and the 1995 Spider-Man story arc “Planet of the Symbiotes.”

Brock, and Venom, made his big-screen debut in 2007 in director Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, in which he was played by Topher Grace. Talk of a potential Venom spinoff began at about the same time. By 2008, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick — then known for Zombieland, but later for Deadpool — signed on to pen a script, for Gary Ross to direct. That version never materialized, though, and Sony rebooted its Spider-Man series with 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man. The following year, Sony announced plans to expand the franchise beginning with films starring Venom and the Sinister Six, but those too faltered, and the studio struck a deal with Marvel Studios to co-produce another Spider-Man reboot, and introduce the wall-crawler in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer from a script by Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, Venom stars Tom Hardy, Jenny Slate, Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed. The film arrives Oct. 5, 2018.
