Mads Mikkelsen would be willing to play Doctor Doom in his upcoming solo movie so Fox let’s get this shit done
The Doctor Doom movie was guaranteed my interest when it turned out that Noah Hawley would be developing it. But, man. Now? Can you imagine if Mads Mikkelsen actually got the role? I’m sort of assuming it won’t happen. But, man.
CBR:
Before he signed up for the role of Kaecilius in Doctor Strange, Mads Mikkelsen had already had his brush with casting for a Marvel Comics-related property. That property was the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot that is largely remembered as a critical flop. Mikkelsen tried out for a role in the film, but quickly realized it wasn’t for him. Now, with films like Doctor Strange and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story under his belt, Mikkelsen has revealed that he would give the Fantastic Four another shot… if he could play Doctor Doom.
While there’s no official word of another Fantastic Four movie in the works, Mikkelsen was responding to a question from ScreenGeek regarding Legion and Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley’s announced Doctor Doom solo movie. When asked if Mikkelsen would humor another shot at the Fantastic Four universe:
“Yeah, it’s always interesting,” Mikkelsen said. “They are experimenting with doing some of the villain’s stories as well. Let’s see if they do that. I’m not familiar that they’ve done it with anyone yet. They haven’t done it with The Joker [and] they haven’t done it with The Penguin. So, we’ll see when that day comes.”
Mikkelsen went on to say that a film like the Doctor Doom solo movie would need to have a central character with multiple layers of complexity, a “rounded shape” with “two sides of the coin.” 20th Century Fox, which owns the distribution rights to Fantastic Four films, has attempted villain-centric storylines in the past. X-Men: First Class came from a failed attempt at a film called X-Men Origins: Magneto. While First Class spends a decent amount of time with the team that would soon form the early X-Men, it also spends time humanizing their longtime foe, Magneto.
In terms of Mikkelsen’s desire to see rounded, villainous characters, there are few better examples than Doctor Doom. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Doctor Doom first appeared in Fantastic Four #5 in 1962. Since his introduction, Doctor Doom has tangled with the likes of the Fantastic Four, Luke Cage, Celestials and reality itself. He has been a maniacal conqueror, but also, more recently, taken on the mantle of Iron Man in Tony Stark’s absence.
Little is known about Noah Hawley’s Doctor Doom film. The project was announced during the Legion panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego this year. No further, solid details have surfaced since then.
