‘Defenders’ Trailer: The War For New York Is Here
Not even Finn Jones’ dumb, dumb, dumb glower as Iron Fist could derail me from being hyped by this trailer. I’m ready, ready to watch the War for New York.
Following a brief teaser video released yesterday, Netflix has debuted the first in-depth look at Marvel Television’s “Defenders,” the streaming service’s long-awaited team series which will bring together the casts of “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage” and Iron Fist.” The eight-episode miniseries arrives in August 2017.
In addition to the team’s core group of four, the trailer also features Misty Knight, Claire Temple, a resurrected (and presumable evil) Elektra and joined by Sigourney Weaver’s mysterious Alexandra. Colleen Wing is missing, though we know Jessica Henwick will reprise her “Iron Fist” role in the ensemble series. Over the course of the trailer, the future Defenders are introduced separately, only to find themselves brought together through different circumstances (Matt Murdock is Jones’ lawyer when she’s hauled in by Misty, and Claire introduces Luke to his future BFF Danny Rand), and in the closing scene, debating whether they should make their partnership official.
Leading to Danny’s declaration that they “make quite a team,” we see the heroes smack down a number of Hand ninjas, trade quips, and get our first glimpse of the series’ requisite hallway fight, all set to a remixed version of Nirvana’s “Come As You Are.”
Whether they like it or not, they’re destined to become the Defenders. Or, as Stick puts it, “The war for New York is here… so get your shit together.”
Although little has been revealed about the plot of “The Defenders,” we do know that the four key heroes meet at offices at Midland Circle, which viewers of “Daredevil” will recognize as the location of the enormous hole in the ground discovered by Matt Murdock and Elektra in Season Two. That, along with the new video teaser, indicates the Hand plays a significant role in the miniseries. How Sigourney Weaver’s Alexandra fits into the series’ plot remains to be seen, though the trailer indicates she may be revealed as the person in control of the Hand.
