Kylo Ren’s scar moved in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ because Rian Johnson thought it was goofy
Rian Johnson took a good, long look at Kylo Ren’s scar in The Force Awakens and was like, “nah” to its placement. Which explains why it looked different in the trailer for The Last Jedi. And cooler, too. I’m down with it. Calm down, nerds!
Eagle-eyed fans may have noticed that something in the “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” teaser trailer seemed a bit … off. Yes, Kylo Ren’s facial scar has somehow moved since the events of 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Is it due to a mysterious disturbance in the Force, a simple mistake, or something else?
It turns out it’s the latter. Asked on Twitter about the change, writer/director Rian Johnson said it wasn’t an oversight, but rather a deliberate choice. “It was my decision to slightly adjust it, and that was my justification,” he wrote. “It honestly looked goofy running straight up the bridge of his nose.”
