‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ director teases new suits and technology
I imagine, oh do I imagine, that the Ant-Man and Wasp flicks are going to be like the Iron Man movies. In the sense that each new installment will bring spiffy new technology for fans to eat up.
Production on Marvel’s summer 2018 blockbuster “Ant-Man and the Wasp” is about to get underway in Atlanta, and apparently the new film will feature some changes for our hero’s supersuit and attendant gadgets, according to its director Payton Reed.
At a recent press open house at Marvel’s LA offices, the director took some time out of his schedule to show reporters some of the upcoming film’s storyboards and production art, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.
Despite teasing that Scott Lang “can do even new and stranger things” with his new equipment, the director nonetheless went to great pains to stress that not everything on display during the event would definitely appear in the finished film. “Some will end up in the movie, some won’t end up in the movie,” said Reed, “but it’s really a way to R&D stuff before you put it to camera.”
Reed also reflected on how fans can expect the design of Ant-Man’s costume to change going forward. “For Ant-Man specifically, in that first movie, the suit, intentionally so, is kind of a relic,” the director said. “It represents his past, so this is really the new iteration that is the modern version of the tech.”
“There was one idea that Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) has forwarded the shrinking and growing technology so that it’s not just necessarily the suits that are the vessels,” Reed further elaborated. “Maybe it could be vehicles or something else as well.”
Eagle-eyed journalists at the event also spotted the original Wasp suit seen last glimpsed briefly in 2015’s “Ant-Man,” movie. This led some present to speculate that fans might also see a return of the original Wasp, Janet Van Dyne, from the quantum realm. It is a notion that Reed seemed reluctant to rule out, with the director simply saying, “only time will tell.”
Debuting in theaters July 6, 2018, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” is directed by Peyton Reed and stars Evangeline Lilly, Paul Rudd, Michael Peña and Michael Douglas.
