‘BioShock’ Developer Irrational Games Now Rebranded As Ghost Story Games
Irrational Games and Ken Levine, whose last great game came in 2007 (#shotsfired), has announced that they’ve rebranded themselves as Ghost Story Games. Here’s hoping they churn out something less turd-soaked than BioShock Infinite. An occasionally fun, deeply pretentious, mess of a game.
Irrational Games was largely closed down in 2014, and those left behind kept the lights for a good long time. Today, they’ve changed the name of their company to Ghost Story Games. A new website says they’re working on something fresh.
“Our mission is simple: to create immersive, story-driven games for people who love games that ask something of them,” reads a mission statement. “While we believe our new games will have strong appeal to fans of BioShock, our new focus allows us to craft experiences where the gameplay is as challenging as the stories.”
The site notes 12 members on the founding team, including Irrational’s creative director Ken Levine, art director Shawn Robertson and executive producer Don Roy. The studio makes mention of a total staff of 25.
“Ghost stories are immersive, exciting, and steeped in community,” reads an FAQ. “The name reminds us of our mission.”
Irrational was “wound down” after the release of the last pieces of downloadable content for BioShock Infinite, called Burial at Sea Episode 1 and Episode 2. Ghost Story Games will assume Irrational’s social media accounts, which boast hundreds of thousands of followers. The website says that the team is excited to remain associated with the BioShock franchise and its fans going forward.
No word on exactly what kind of game it’s working on, but the Boston-based studio is actively hiring. We’ve reached out to the team for comment.
