Watch: ‘Super Mario Odyssey’ In ‘Grand Theft Auto’ Is The Nightmare You’d Expect

Seeing Mario run around vaguely realistic humans in Super Mario Odyssey was already a nightmare. So, why not double down and imagine this ill-fitting juxtaposition in Grand Theft Auto 4? There is no reason, I say! No reason!

Polygon:

Super Mario Odyssey takes the lovable Italian plumber on an incredible journey across a wild variety of landscapes and environments, including the urban playground of New Donk City. Now we have a better idea of what a life-size Mario would look like in the Big Apple — and it’s as hilarious and disturbing as you’d expect.

YouTuber CrowbCat transported Mario to Liberty City with the help of Grand Theft Auto 4 and some mods for the game’s Windows PC version. The result is more off-putting than Nintendo’s reveal trailer for Super Mario Odyssey, where Mario cavorts around New Donk City with humans who are twice his height. Let’s count the reasons why.

Nintendo’s most famous character may be an acrobatic guy, but he comes crashing down to earth in a bloody way when he meets the relatively realistic physics of this concrete jungle — not to mention opponents like bewildered pedestrians, hostile gangbangers and the relentless Liberty City Police Department. Then, of course, there are obstacles such as land, sea and air vehicles; perhaps this humble plumber should stick to Mario Kart. And there’s something unforgettable about the image of Mario getting a lap dance.

You could pick any one of those elements as a reason for Nintendo to issue a takedown notice on this video, and we expect the company will do so imminently. So you might want to watch this trailer while you still can.

Super Mario Odyssey is set for release this holiday season on Nintendo Switch. The console will launch March 3 worldwide for $299.
