Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the next magical adventure from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling to hit the big screen, and although it’s not even out yet, director David Yates has big plans for the next installment.
During a roundtable interview, and as reported by Screen Rant, Yates confirmed that Hogwarts’ famous headmaster would be joining the cast. Fans have speculated that although Fantastic Beasts take place a few decades before the events of Harry Potter, some of the characters could still appear because the timelines overlap. Now, Yates has announced that some of those theories are correct, hinting at what fans could expect to see.
“In the second movie Dumbledore comes back,” Yates said. “He’s got a couple of good scenes with Newt … We’re discussing who would play Dumbledore, any suggestions would be good.”
It may seem obvious, but it’s important to note that the Dumbledore who appears on screen won’t be played by Michael Gambon. Since Fantastic Beasts takes place years before the events of Harry Potter, it would be a much younger version of the wizard who appears on screen alongside Newt Scamander.
Although this will mark Dumbledore’s debut in the Fantastic Beasts universe, it won’t be the first time his name is brought up. Yates previously told Entertainment Weekly that he will be a topic of conversation in this first film, but couldn’t expand on what that would look like. Grindelwald, the evil wizard that existed before that other evil wizard, will also be mentioned quite a bit in the movie.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the first of five feature films planned, hits theaters Nov. 17.
