‘Incredibles 2’ Release Moved Up To 2018; ‘Toy Story 4’ Delayed Until 2019
Pixar has swapped the release dates of two of its biggest sequels, Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4. Perhaps notably, this is the third delay for the fourth Toy Story installment.
Disney and Pixar have swapped the release dates for sequels “The Incredibles 2” and “Toy Story 4.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The Incredibles 2” will now release on June 15, 2018, and “Toy Story 4” will hit theaters on June 21, 2019. The change is attributed to an “accelerated production schedule” for “Incredibles 2.”
Writer-producer Brad Bird previously said of the “Incredibles” sequel, “It’s very actively moving, and we’re excited about it…[We’re] trying to take it in some new directions,” noting, “Hopefully it’s the same characters and feel, but going in a new direction…I mean, that’s the trick with a sequel. It’s repeating yourself, without repeating yourself.”
The film was originally set to open in the same year as “Captain Marvel,” “Shazam,” the “Justice League” sequel, and the fourth “Avengers” movie, but it will now release the same summer as genre heavyweights “Avengers: Infinity War,” the Han Solo “Star Wars” anthology film, “Ant-Man & The Wasp,” “Aquaman” and “Alita: Battle Angel.”
Directed by Bird, “The Incredibles 2” is a sequel to the critically-acclaimed 2004 superhero film, which grossed $633 million globally and $70.4 million domestically. The film was, at the time, had the second-highest opening for an animated movie.
