Watch: ‘Akira’ Tribute recreates classic scenes in Beautiful CGI
A live-action remake of Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1988 anime masterpiece “Akira” has been in development hell for years now. Last we heard, Warner Bros. was courting Justin Lin to direct, but who knows?
For now, though, two fans have taken us back to the world of Neo-Tokyo in a trailer for a hypothetical (yet unmade) “Akira” movie that recreates images from the original in gorgeous CGI. Most of them come from the beginning of the film, where protagonist Kaneda and his bōsōzoku gang, the Capsules, are pursued by the rival Clowns. As they zip through the night, their vehicles leave sleek bands of color in their wake.
Created by Ed Kremer and Dean Fowler, the video stays faithful to the source material, recreating iconic shots such as the original Tokyo beingannihilated by a psychic blast, as well as the overhead angle of Kaneda walking to his bike. There are a few stylish additions, however, such as a skull imprinted on his helmet.
