Third ‘Avengers’ movie is titled ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, fourth movie is currently untitled

Thanos.

So. First we had Avengers: Infinity War, Part 1 and Part 1. Then it was announced that there was not going to be a “Part 1” and “Part 2”, with the third and fourth movies getting their own titles. Now! Now it’s been announced that the third movie futzing *is* Avengers: Infinity War, and the fourth one is untitled. WHEW.

io9:

In May 2018, the Avengers are going to have an Infinity War. A year after that though, we now have no idea what they’ll be doing. Marvel just clarified a rumor that had been circling for several months: its previously announced two-part Infinity War movie is no more.

Here’s a brief recap. In 2014, Marvel Studios announced that in 2018 and 2019, it would release Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2, respectively. This was the plan for several years until Phase Three finally started withCaptain America: Civil War. The directors of that film, Joe and Anthony Russo, are helming the two Avengers movies and told the press that the films would be very different indeed. In fact, they said they were going to be two totally different movies with new titles. Not a single movie split in two.

That brings us to today. Marvel issued a press release stating that on May 4, 2018, it will release Avengers: Infinity War. Then, on May 3, 2019, it will release what the company is now just calling “Untitled Avengers film.”

What that means for the content of the films is hard to say. It suggests that the war with the Infinity Gems could be over by the end of that film, or it could mean that’s just the start of it. We won’t know specifics for some time as the next several Marvel movies being released—Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. and Spider-Man Homecoming—aren’t likely to have a direct impact on that story. We’ll have to wait until November 3, 2017 when Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters to actually get some answers.
