The Rock confirms he’s starring in Shane Black’s ‘Doc Savage’ adaptation
Saw Nice Guys this weekend. Fucking loved it. Fucking love Shane Black. Fucking love The Rock. I’m primed for this.
“Fast 8” star Dwayne Johnson confirmed on Instagram that he will play the title character in “Iron Man 3” director Shane Black’s upcoming “Doc Savage” film.
“Doc was physically and mentally trained from birth by his father and a team of scientists to become the perfect human specimen with a genius level intellect. His heightened senses are beyond comprehension. He can even identify a woman’s perfume from half a mile away. He is literally the master of everything,” he said of the character. “But here’s the #1 reason I’m excited to become Doc Savage.. HE’S A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO!”
Doc Savage debuted in “The Doc Savage Magazine” in 1933 before moving on to the worlds of radio drama, comic books and movies. This will be the first film starring the character since 1975’s “Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze.” Doc was last seen as part of DC Comics’ First Wave line of books that reintroduced the super-scientist and other pulp heroes.Black signed on in 2013 to co-write and direct the long-simmering Sony Pictures adaptation, which he’s called “a personal film to me.” He is working on the script with co-writers Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry.
Prior to Johnson’s casting, Black expressed his belief that Johnson was the perfect actor for the role: “I would very much like to do ‘Doc’ with a fellow named Dwayne Johnson if we can make that work. I made a decision that Dwayne is the guy. It’s on the back burner while he’s busy.”
“Doc Savage” has no scheduled release date.
