New ‘Star Trek’ series is airing weekly in 2017 on CBS’ streaming service

Great. Just what we need. Another streaming service. CBS got their own, and they’re bringing Star Trek back on it. I feel like we’ve known this for a bit, but I suppose this is confirmation.

Polygon:

CBS may be focused on garnering more subscribers for its standalone streaming service, All Access, but that doesn’t mean the network is foregoing a classic cable approach to the way shows are delivered.

During a conference call with investors, CBS head Les Moonves confirmed that after the first episode of Bryan Fuller’s new Star Trek series premieres on television, new episodes would air weekly on All Access. According to TrekCore, Moonves said that they wanted to stay away from the popular streaming trend of dropping an entire season’s worth of episodes at once, like Netflix does with its original series.

Moonves also confirmed that Star Trek would be one of the first new series CBS was creating for All Access, but it wouldn’t be the only one. The network and its digital division have plans to release “three to four” new series per year on Access for subscribers. Right now, a subscription package to All Access provides users with CBS’ entire archive of programming, but doesn’t offer any original series.

Fuller, best known for creating shows like Hannibal and Pushing Daisies, will act as showrunner, alongside original Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s son, Rod, andWrath of Khan director Nicholas Meyers. The official synopsis for the show doesn’t provide too many details, but does confirm the series will have an entirely new cast of characters, new worlds to be explored and new dangers. Fuller previously said it was important to their team, however, to stay as true as they could to the general themes fans of the series have come to know since the original began in 1966.

Star Trek starts production later this year in Toronto.
