No Duh: Marvel Studios Characters appearing in New ‘Spider-Man’ Movie

I thought this was already confirmed, back when Marvel Studios and Sony announced they had brokered a deal? But hey. If it wasn’t confirmed, or if you missed it, here is the news, now double-confirmed.

Comics Alliance:

When Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios agreed on a deal to essentially share Spider-Man, the first thing they decided on was that he would be formally introduced in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. After all, if you’re going to have a deal with Marvel, you might as well take advantage of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and their many characters. Also, that’s a door that swings both ways, which means that, yes, some of your favorite Avengers will be making an appearance in Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff.

While we mostly largely suspected this would be the case, it was confirmed by Marvel producer Kevin Feige to Entertainment Weekly, who said, “He is in the universe now, and the fun of the universe is that characters go back and forth.” While Feige wouldn’t confirm who would be popping back and forth, there are some obvious ideas.

The most obvious is Tony Stark who has a connection with Peter Parker in Civil War. We can’t get into specifics, but let’s just say they will have an existing relationship — we’ll call it mentor/protege, as much as Tony Stark can mentor anyone — by the time the Spider-Man reboot comes around. Also, it’s telling that when the new Peter Parker, Tom Holland, was auditioning for Marvel, his screentests were all alongside Robert Downey, Jr.

Another possibility is Captain America, who lives in Brooklyn, while Parker and his Aunt May live in Queens. Just by virtue of their locations, it makes sense that they could cross paths.

Given that Thor and Hulk are still missing, they’re out. Falcon already made a cameo in Ant-Man. And characters like Vision, Scarlet Witch and Black Widow, just don’t seem to have much in common with Spider-Man. Any other guesses?

Director Jon Watts is set to begin filming on the new Spider-Man movie this summer, so expect casting announcements to start happening any day now.
