’10 Cloverfield Lane’ Trailer: Do The Monster Mash!
Wait, what the fuck? Abrams and his Monster Squad have filmed a “sequel” to Cloverfield, and none of us were any the wiser? Oh, J.J. But, hey. I’m excited.
Taking J.J. Abrams’ love for the “mystery box” to new lengths, Paramount Pictures caught everyone off-guard with the debut of the teaser for the post-apocalyptic thriller “10 Cloverfield Lane.” Surprise!
Previously referred to as “Valencia” and “The Cellar,” director Dan Trachtenberg’s film turns out to be the long-discussed sequel — or at least spiritual sequel — to “Cloverield,” the 2008 found-footage giant-monster flick produced by Abrams and helmed by Matt Reeves.
“The idea came up a long time ago during production,” Abrams said in a statement toCollider. “We wanted to make it a blood relative of ‘Cloverfield.’ The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”
So there, “a blood relative of ‘Cloverfield.’” Surprise!
The trailer, which arrived in theaters with Michael Bay’s “13 Hours,” is one and a half minutes of ratcheting tension, as footage of stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr. seemingly enjoying everyday home life give way to scenes of suspicion and horror, marked by the rattling of their bunker and the eerie shift in “I Think We’re Alone Now.”
What’s the film actually about, and what’s that “something” Goodman warns is coming? Well, those remain in the mystery box.
