Sony has sold more than 35 million PlayStation 4s; imagine if they had exclusives!
Yeah, straight trolling in the headline. I love my PlayStation 4. It’s my go-to console, and it appears that I’m not alone. Sony has announced that they’ve sold more than 35 million consoles. As opposed to shipped, which makes the numbers even more impressive.
Sony sold-though more than 5.7 million PlayStation 4s during the holiday season, according to the company. Including the holiday sales, the total number of PS4s sold has increased to more than 35.9 million units across the globe, a stat that puts the company at the top of the current video game console market.
Sell-through is a crucial stat, as it reflects the actual number of units sold, not simply the total units shipped to retailers. The 5.7 million units sold stat is fascinating, considering Sony’s slim number of exclusive video games during the holiday period compared to its competitor. Microsoft’s Xbox One boasted new entries in the Forza, Tomb Raider, andHalo franchises. Sony has a substantial slate of exclusives for 2016, featuring new entries in the Uncharted and Hot Shots Golf franchises, as well as the long delayed release ofThe Last Guardian.
Sony also announced that 60 percent more users subscribed to the PlayStation Plus program when compared with the same window last year. The service provides users a handful of free games each month for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita. That uptick in subscriptions may be the result of the reliable quality of the program’s games, as documented at Polygon.
