Quentin Tarantino has said it before, but the director confirmed yesterday that he’s only got two more movies in him.
Talking to Jimmy Kimmel about his upcoming western, The Hateful Eight, Tarantino said that he never wanted to be the type of director who took whatever projects came his way. He said he wanted to end with a near-perfect record, and knowing how many movies he’s got left to achieve that goal helps put the pressure on him.
“If I only think that I only have two movies, well, that keeps it at the tip of the spear, if you know what I mean,” he said. “That means those ones better be good and I better mean everything about them.”
Tarantino originally claimed last year that he was going to stop making films after his 10th movie, and has spoken about other interests outside of feature films.
Most recently, he said he had plans to adapt Elmore Leonard’s novel Forty Lashes Less One as a television miniseries, but there’s no estimated timeline for when that’ll get underway.
The Hateful Eight, which is Tarantino’s eighth feature film, is currently playing in limited theaters on 70 mm film. It will be released nationwide on Jan. 8, 2016.
