Peyton Reed returning to direct ‘Ant-Man’ sequel, ‘Ant-Man And The Wasp’
When Edgar Wright left Ant-Man, I spent a good amount of time bemoaning his departure, and what it meant for the film. Additionally, I railed muchly against Marvel Studios’ replacement, Peyton Reed. Well! I ended up quite enjoying the movie. So I welcome Reed returning for the sequel. You?
It isn’t always an easy for filmmakers making Marvel movies, and it’s not often they stick around for more than one. “Thor” has seen a new director for each iteration (Taika Waititi will helm “Thor: Ragnarok“), and while the Russo Brothers have not only found their footing with the studio, but risen through the ranks, with both “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Infinity War” on their plate, there’s Joss Whedon who came out of “Avengers: Age Of Ultron” a bit soured on the whole experience. SoPeyton Reed returning to helm the sequel to “Ant-Man” is actually a bigger deal than it seems on appear.
THR reports that the director is in negotiations to helm “Ant-Man And The Wasp.” Coming into a situation that was likely stressful after Edgar Wright‘s departure, Reed seemed game and enthusiastic about the opportunity to direct “Ant-Man,” and weathered a bumpy transition to landing the gig, and exceeded fan expectations. It pays to remember that when Wright left, the perception was that “Ant-Man” might’ve been Marvel’s first debacle. Not so. While not one of the best performing films for Marvel financially, it was enthusiastically received by fans, and there’s a good foundation to build upon. And Reed coming back seems like Marvel giving the director the ultimate thank you gift.
No word yet on when will write “Ant-Man And The Wasp”— Adam McKayand Paul Rudd were credited on the movie, but there was additional work done by unnamed Marvel scribes, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they got a promotion — but it will arrive on July 6, 2018.
