Report: Spielberg’s Dreamworks is splitting from Disney
I guess I didn’t even realize that Steven Spielberg’s Dreamworks was aligned with Disney. But I suppose this revelation is a tad late, since it’s only been brought to my attention to inform me that this partnership was ending. Alas.
DreamWorks Pictures will reportedly end its distribution arrangement with Disney next year, following the release of Steven Spielberg’s “The BFG.”
Citing “those with knowledge of the situation,” The Hollywood Reporter contends Spielberg will likely make his new home at Universal Pictures, where he’s maintained offices, even while DreamWorks partnered first with Paramount Pictures and then with Disney.
Spielberg was, of course, an executive producer of Universal’s “Jurassic World,” which has grossed more than $1.6 billion worldwide. Neither DreamWorks nor Universal would comment on the story, but an unnamed Universal source told THR that while talk of a deal is premature, “the studio would welcome the chance to be DreamWorks’ distribution partner.”
Spielberg’s next film, the Tom Hanks Cold War thriller “Bridge of Spies,” opens Oct. 16. After that, it’s the adaptation of the Roald Dahl book “The BFG.”
