‘Twin Peaks’ revival starting production in September; looking at 2016 premiere
That Twin Peaks revival that’s been on, off, on again? It’s finally getting started this September. Yes, yes! you proclaim. But when is it dropping? Uh. Um. Sometime. In 2016.
Putting to rest any lingering doubts about the future of “Twin Peaks,” Showtime announced today that the revival will begin production next month, with an eye toward a 2016 premiere. That’s not to say the date is set in stone, though.
“I want it as badly and as soon as the biggest fans in the world want it,” Showtime President David Nevins told journalists during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour. “I’m hoping we make 2016. It’s not clear. It’s ultimately going to be in [series co-creators David Lynch and Mark Frost’s] control. They’re going to shoot the whole thing and then they’ll start posting. Bottom line is, I’ll take it when they’re ready with it … but I’m hoping sooner rather than later.”
According to Deadline, Lynch and Frost wrote one long script, which Lynch will shoot as a movie, and then edit into individual episodes. Although “Twin Peaks” was announced as nine episodes, Nevins said it will probably run longer. However, there’s no way to know until filming is complete.
The revival has been an emotional roller-coaster ride for fans since it was announced in October, with Lynch walking away from the project in April over a contract dispute with the cable channel, only to return the next month. However, Nevins told reporters this morning that, through it all, he knew “Twin Peaks” would return.
“I never had doubt we would get him back, ‘Twin Peaks’ is a huge priority for us,” he said. “It became clear it would take more than nine episodes, which we had planned and budgeted for. We had to sort that out. Lynch wanted to direct all episodes, and we wanted him to direct all episodes. We are looking to be in great shape.”
