Amazon orders pilot from Tig Notaro and Louis C.K.

Tig Notaro.

Tig Notaro is dominating the scene this year. HBO special. Documentary. And now the comedian is getting a pilot greenlit, which is being produced by Louis C.K.’s production company.

AV Club:

Between her upcoming HBO special and the Netflix documentary that was recently released about her, comedian Tig Notaro is having a 2015 that’s a hell of a lot better than her 2012, when a series of personal catastrophes came very close to ending her life. Now, another major streaming service is expressing interest in her story, with Amazon ordering a pilot for a semi-autobiographical TV series from Notaro, screenwriter Diablo Cody, and producer Louis C.K.

Notaro will write the pilot with Cody, best known for her breakout script, Juno, as well as her Showtime series The United States Of Tara. The as-yet-untitled Amazon show will come out of C.K.’s Pig Newton production company, which also produces the comedian’s critically acclaimed show Louie. (C.K. is a long-time friend of Notaro’s, and was the one who convinced her to release her landmark set, Live, in which she famously discussed her cancer diagnosis on the stage of the Largo in L.A., to an internet-wide audience.)

The single-camera show will star Notaro as herself, chronicling a trip she took back home to Mississippi to take her ailing mother off of life support, while struggling to recover from her own life-threatening disease. The show—which was originally pitched to FX before being picked up to pilot by Amazon—is being billed as a comedy, because ”pitch black gallows humor so dark that it twists your heart into painful knots” has yet to be recognized as its own, separate genre of TV.
