Warren Ellis and Gale Anne adapting ‘El Pantera’ for TV
Gale Anne and my Dark Lord and Master (HAIL, HAIL) are adapting El Pantera for television. Now, truthfully, I’ve never heard of El Pantera. But I’m going anywhere Ellis leads me.
Warren Ellis is teaming with “The Walking Dead” producer Gale Anne Hurd to adapt the popular Mexican comic book and TV series “El Pantera” for Universal Cable Productions.
It’s part of what The Hollywood Reporter characterizes as part a “massive genre push” by the NBCUniversal-owned studio that will also include adaptations of Anthony Del Col and Conor McCreery’s IDW Publishing comic series “Kill Shakespeare” and the British cult film “The Machine.”
The announcement comes just a day after the studio announced a first-look deal with Dark Horse that puts into development adaptations of such comics as “Concrete,” “The Umbrella Academy” and “Harrow County.”
Based on the 1970s comic about a crime-fighting vigilante, “El Pantera” is the first project underEllis’ year-old deal with UCP.
Debuting in 2010 from IDW, “Kill Shakespeare” brings together the playwright’s greatest heroes and most memorable villains for a quest to find and kill, or possibly save, the reclusive wizard William Shakespeare.Creators Del Col and McCreery will adapt the comic for the studio.
Destined for Syfy, “The Machine” is an adaptation of the 2013 British sci-fi thriller about a brilliant computer programmer who creates artificial intelligence for the military, which, naturally, goes horribly wrong. The film’s writer Caradog W. James, will pen the script.
