ID4 Sequel gets official title, ‘Independence Day Resurgence’ and plot details
‘Cause you absolutely didn’t ask for it!
In a live-stream press conference, director Roland Emmerich revealed the official title to the upcoming “Independence Day” sequel and along with the all-star cast revealed a few plot details about the highly anticipated film.
“Independence Day Resurgence” takes places 20 years after the events of the first film and serves as both a resurgence of the franchise and as a resurgence of the universe, as described by Emmerich. Since the events of the first film, the world has drastically changed with the formation of the new Earth Space Defense division, which has been tasked with protecting Earth from alien forces and has created man-made/alien hybrid machines from the remnants of the first alien attack.
When a new threat arises, the nations of the Earth will have to come together once more to combat the extinction of the human race.
Much of the original cast reprises their roles from the first film, with Jeff Goldblumb returning as David Levinson, Bill Pullman as former President Whitmore, Vivica A. Fox as Jasmine and more. However, the press conference revealed a little bit more about new comers Liam Hemsworth–who plays a fighter pilot now tasked with a more menial job–and Jessie Usher–who plays the son of Vivica A. Fox and Will Smith’s characters from the original. Maika Monroe plays Patricia Whitmore, the President’s daughter from the first film, whose job and overall role in the film was kept pretty secret during the conference.
“Independence Day Resurgence,” directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Jessie Usher, Vivica A. Fox, Sela Ward, Bill Pullman, and more, arrives in theaters June 24, 2016.
