Kaare Andrews rocking new ‘IRON FIST’ ongoing. Writing, and drawing, and wee!
For my money, nothing is ever going to beat the Brubaker, Fraction, and Aja run on Iron Fist. Seminal. Untouchable. In fact if you haven’t read it, fuck you, I forgive you and get on it. That said, I’m willing to pick up what Kaare Andrews is putting down.
Though he’s done some work for Marvel recently, Kaare Andrews‘ output for the publisher has not been quite what it once was, as the veteran writer/artist has been mostly absent from monthly comics for the past few years. But that’s about to change, as this morning Marvel announced Andrews will write an illustrate a new ongoing Iron Fist series, launching in the spring as part of the publisher’s All-New Marvel Now initiative.
Announced in an interview via Hero Complex, Iron Fist: The Living Weapon will feature Danny Rand, a.k.a. Iron Fist, returning to the city of K’un Lun “as kind of Bruce Wayne without a plan,” according to Andrews. “He’s despondent. He is not connecting with life, and he doesn’t know why.” Andrews says the title will be influenced by Jim Steranko’s celebrated run on Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., describing comics and film as the “yin and yang of my art making career.”
Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso spoke on the decision to have Andrews launch this new series, revealing that the two share a passion for martial arts films: “The way I looked at Iron Fist, I thought … I’d love to have someone come in and tell a movie, just treat the reader like they’ve stepped into a cinema, they’re sitting down in a seat, the lights go down, the curtain comes up.” Andrews will also color the ongoing title, as well as illustrate the covers, as Alonso believes that’s when he’s at his best: “His work is particularly inspired when he does that, when he takes full ownership of the book, and that’s what he’s done.”
