NETFLIX in talks for a third ‘HOUSE OF CARDS’ season
Huzzah! A few weeks back it was reported that House of Cards wasn’t going to span past a second season. Well! Not if Netflix has anything to say about it. Apparently the Streaming Service That Can is in talks to bring the son of a bitch back for a third. You know what I say? Back up the truck! The Money Truck!
The second season of House of Cards isn’t set to air until next year, but Netflix is in talks to produce a third season, despite earlier indications that the second season would be its last. “Our intent is that the show keep going for sure,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos in a keynote speech for Film Independent on Saturday. “It was a 26-episode commitment. It was not our intent that it just run for two seasons.” Later, Sarandos confirmed to Deadline that talks were ongoing.
After its premiere in February, House of Cards was a breakaway hit, receiving nine Emmy nominations and earning David Fincher a win as best director of a drama series. But earlier this month, executive producer Rick Cleveland indicated that the show would not return after its 26-episode contract ran out. “House of Cards is only going to go a second season and I think that’s it,” he said at the time, suggesting that stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright would return to the feature film world.
In his talk yesterday, Sarandos also spoke of premiering movies on Netflix, blaming theaters for ignoring consumers’ preferences. By insisting on exclusive windows, “theater owners stifle this kind of innovation at every turn,” he said. “Why not follow with the consumer’s desire to watch things when they want, instead of spending tens of millions of dollars to advertise to people who may not live near a theater, and then make them wait for four or five months before they can even see it?”
