Suda 51 brings the Peace
The upcoming Anime compilation Short Peace, featuring several directors- chief among them being Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo – is getting a video game spin-off/episode led by gaming’s favourite madman, Suda 51.
The PS3 game will form the fifth episode of the compilation and will hopefully do a better job of cross-breeding media than The Matrix did when it went all-out assault on wallets and impressionable minds all those years ago. That said, never forget how rad The Animatrix was, or that bit when Smith jumped on the car bonnets in the second movie. Yeah, that was superb.
Tsukigime Ranko no Ichiban Nagai Hi (Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day) will supposedly be a 2D shooter, recalling titles such as Rez and with a heavy focus on all things weird. Killer 7 and No More Heroes creator Suda 51 is the natural choice to direct, but just incase he wasn’t weird enough on his own, Tokyo Jungle director Yohei Kataoka has been drafted in to help. This man created a game that centers around gangs of animals vying for survival in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo. It is genuinely mental and the only game I know that boasts scenarios such as a gang of chickens going claw-to-claw with a velociraptor or Pomeranians ‘running shit’.
Tsukigime Ranko features Ranko, a young girl who’s a parking-garage attendant day, elite hitman for the shadowy Tsukigime Enterprises by night. To pull off her jobs, she has to run across a surreal landscape, evading foes and using assorted “effects” to fight back.
So, that’s a game mentioned in the same breath as stone-cold classic, Rez, headed by two of the most interesting directors in gaming, with ties to the latest work from the creator of Akira. I want to tell you how hard this scenario makes my wiener, but I’m trying to evolve my writing style so I won’t. Just imagine it though.
