The Meming of Life: Carreon Sues
If you didn’t do the required reading, you may not have heard of this guy. Right now Charles Carreon is the most hated man on the internet. Now, I could give two shits about a ridiculous lawyer suing a site I find mildly humorous. But when his ridiculous actions solidify his position in the universe of meme, my journalistic instincts kick in, and I am forced to take notice. After all, I’m merely a vessel doing God’s work.
It all started over a ridonkulous dispute with popular good guy site theoatmeal.com. Apparently, from what I can tell, the oatmeal.com dude publicly bitched that the site funnyjunk.com was stealing his cartoons, and publishing them on their site. This was all fine and good, until funnyjunk folks decided to up the ante, and hired attorney/internet tough-guy Charles Carreon to flex some legal muscle on theoatmeal.com.
Carreon demanded $20K in damages for legally defaming funnyjunk.com, in bitching that they stole his art. So theoatmeal.com dude publicly aired the ridiculous Carreon letter, publicly refuted it, and then asked his followers to donate monies to the Mom-Bear Love Association: an organization he would rather donate $20K to rather than pay Carreon or funnyjunk.
The result: The Mom-Bear Love Association has, to date, collected over $220,000. No doubt, a win for the good guys in this case. But the real story here was the collective hatred of Charles Carreon eventually manifesting as a small but popular meme. Now that he has been solidified in internet stardom, it is my journalistic duty to bring the 5 funniest to light. Hopefully, we don’t get sued for publishing this.
