The Dude’s High 5’s: Top 5 Musical Mash-ups

For those of you who may know me, you might be shocked to see that I am actually doing a musical High 5. I’m gonna let the rest of you OLers in on a little secret about the Dude. I don’t like music. That’s not to say I hate music. There are some songs I love, but I don’t actively seek out new sounds to expand my horizons like I will with other media. I can’t explain it very well. I think music is intimate, personal. Whereas a movie has 2 hours to win you over, books have a narrative that can drive the imagination, and a TV show has seasons, a song has to grab you and tell a story in minutes. This is probably why I like so few songs. So when I was introduced to the concept of mash-ups, I was perplexed. How could I possible like two songs thrown together when I didn’t really care for either song on their own. I’m not sure, but here they are, my top 5 music mash-ups.

5. Stevie Wonder vs. The Clash — Uptight (By Jack The Video Ripper)

I like the Clash but I’m not a Stevie wonder fan. This mash-up however works pretty well with Stevie’s lyrics. The amazing thing in this video is that he’s even clapping along in time with the Clash’s music. Typically I like a mash-up that uses both song’s lyrics and music and either switches off or blends them, but I feel this one is strong the way it is.

4. Nirvana and Rick Astley – Never Gonna Give up your Teen Spirit (By DJ Morgoth)

This one seems like a joke, but it works. Trust me.

3. Bob Marley and The Beatles — Let it Be, No Cry (By DJ Faroff)

Want proof that I don’t like music? I don’t like the Beatles. I don’t hate them, but I don’t particularly like any of their songs. I recognize the amount of influence they have had on music and I thank them for that, but they are not my cup of tea. I’m also vaguely aware of Bob Marley, certainly not a fan of his. However the two have come together to make this, the mellowest combo ever. DISCLAIMER: If you didn’t smoke pot before hearing this, you may after.

2. Justin Bieber vs. Slipknot — Psychosocial Baby (By isosine)

I hate Slipknot and I hate Bieber but ever since a friend pointed this one out to me, I haven’t been able to stop listening to it. Damn you Dapper Orangutan!   This really is the perfect example of a well thought out mash-up.   The contrast in styles of the two artists brought together into one song and then blending them is impressive to say the least.

1. United States of Pop 2009 (Blame it on the Pop) (By DJ Earthworm)

.
Every year DJ Earthworm takes the top 25 billboard songs and creates a work of art. 2009 I think was his best work as I dislike probably 23 of these songs but together they sound great.

Please share your favorite combos with me, I’m always on the look out for good mashups (This very well may be the only musical High 5 I do, so make it count!)
