Jim Lee Explains Superman’s Relationship Status In The DC Reboot. Hint: Hairy Palms.
Jim Lee is tacitly acknowledging that which we already know. Much like in Moonlighting, The Office, and Marvel’s own Spider-Man, it’s the chase of the relationship with Lois Lane by Clark Kent that gets our krypto-rods shimmering. The pursuit is everything! He does so in recent comments, where he explains Superman’s single status in the DC relaunch.
Daily Blam:
DC Comics will be splitting the famous couple up and starting their relationship at square one. In the current continuity Clark and Lois have been married since 1996, but Lee and the creative teams felt it was time for a shake-up:
“We just felt there were more interesting, creative stories to mine in that time period of Superman’s history prior to him getting married. There was something special and unique about the love triangle that existed between Clark Kent, Superman and Lois Lane. By restoring that essential part of his mythology, we would get a lot more interest in the character and take Superman and Clark Kent in bold new directions that felt more contemporary and modern.”
The relationship status will be continuity for both titles launching in September,Superman by George Perez and Action Comics by Grant Morrison. Both titles have sparked some controversy for their costume changes as well, which was addressed by Morrison, “We’ve been given a lot of leeway to change Superman and answer some of those questions that grown-ups ask nowadays: Why does he look that way, and why does he wear those pants?”
Aside from fashion, Lois will still be appearing in the titles, in a manner that DC hopes is more exciting to fans than in the past. “People will be very surprised by not just what’s happening with Superman, but also with Lois Lane and the entire staff of the Daily Planet,” said Lee.
“Maybe as readers and fans, we’ve grown a little too comfortable with Superman,” he says. “Part of the creative changes we’ve put behind the mythology is to tell people, ‘Look, you may think you know Superman, but you don’t.’ There’s a lot of great stuff about the character that we’re going to show you that hasn’t been discussed or presented before.”
The problem as we all know, is that eventually they’re going to be put back together, and they’re going to face the same problem all over again.
