Mark Millar Leaves Marvel To Do Solely Creator-Owned Work. Whatevs!
Oh I’m getting snarky now! Mark Millar was a favorite writer of mine for a long, long time. His work on The Ultimate, and Old Man Logan will forever go down as cherished stories of mine. Recently though, he’e been focusing on creator-owned titles, and frankly I find them all to be crappy schlock. With all this emphasis has come a weakening of his Marvel swag, and my love for his present material has decayed.
He’s leaving for only creator-owned work. This could cut two different ways.
Millar’s Announcement:
Well, I just finished the dialogue on my last ever script for Marvel. It was a lot of fun, but I’m full-time on Millarworld as of today.Huge thanks to all the guys I worked with on Ultimates 1&2, Civil War, Old Man Logan, Enemy of the State, Ultimate X-Men, 1985, etc, etc. It’s been an amazing experience and I’m stealing all the best ones to work with my on creator-owned anyway 🙂 In the next 12 months: Kick-Ass 2, Nemesis 2, Supercrooks, Superior, the Dave Gibbons project, the Frank Quitely project and HIT-GIRL!! I’m going to miss the lads, the best editorial team in the biz, but there comes a time when every boy needs to start his OWN media empire!!
In a perfect world this means he’ll have more time to concentrate on his titles and perhaps the quality will swell. I doubt it though. A lot. He’s still going to be a jack of all trades, parlaying his comics into movies before they’re even published. And so long as he’s favoring shock value outright (he always liked it) over solid story telling, well. I’m probably off the Millar boat.
