Tony Scott to Direct Mark Millar’s Nemesis
Mark Millar’s Nemesis has been optioned for a film and Tony Scott is going to direct.
Well, that’s the word on the street anyway. Mark Millar has been teasing a super-huge announcement and although it was originally supposed to go down yesterday, the writer has yet to say anything himself. With that being said, I’m not a real journalist so I can run with rumors and spin them as fact. So the fact is, Tony Scott is going to adapt the latest Millar/McNiven collaboration.
In case you’ve been out of the loop, here’s the basic premise of Nemesis: Imagine if the archetypal billionaire-superhero were actually a billionaire-supervillain. Instead of an altruist invested in the betterment of mankind, this individual is a homicidal lunatic. And now imagine that this lunatic hunts the world’s best cops for sport. Throw in tremendous amounts of action (i.e. hyperviolence) and you’ve got the idea.
How do I feel about this latest news? Well, I think the comic book is terrific. In terms of superhero/action comics, Nemesis is exceedingly well done. Do I think a movie could work? Absolutely. In fact, the book almost seems to lend itself to being adapted. I really think that if it pulled off, a Nemesis flick could be on par with the most ridiculous action movies of the 1980’s.
My only concern is that Blake Morrow (the main character/antagonist) might be watered-down or softened up to make him more palatable to the movie-going masses. I think that the core of this guy is that he is admirable for his insanity, that his ability to commit such heinous acts is captivating. And we’re supposed to hate ourselves for loving him. But we’ll have to wait to see if that can translate successfully.
How do I feel about Tony Scott directing? Truthfully, I don’t care either way. I can’t really say that he’d be my first or last choice for the job. Are any of his movies on my list o’ favorites? No. But he seems capable enough. And hell, his brother is Ridley Scott! RIDLEY fuggin’ SCOTT! Now that guy can make a movie!
Whoops. What I meant was, now that guy can make a movie!
I’m excited for this. Let all the hype and speculation begin. Isn’t this part of the fun of being a nerd?
