Friday Brew Review – Post Road Pumpkin Ale
Another Friday, another work-week in the bag, and now it’s time to get halfway into it myself. After doing my normal gig and then giving a drum lesson, I headed for my local beer-dealer.
Wanting to avenge the injustice that was last week’s beer, I made sure to be much more considerate about my choice. Rather than just grabbing the first six-pack to catch my attention, I actually took a minute to look around. “No goon-fuck Pump-o-Jacktern is gonna fool me this time,” I told myself.
And I was right. Kind of.
Well, here’s the thing — I looked around for awhile, and it was the packaging that sold me again. However, I actually took a minute to check out the brewery and make sure it wasn’t one of the huge titans of inebriation that excel in putting out relatively flavorless, cheap beer that keeps the masses happy. /End rant/
Anyways, I hooked myself up with a six pack of Post Road Pumpkin Ale from the good folks at the Brooklyn Brewing Company. Still wanting a pumpkin-flavored, seasonal treat I figured that this Brooklyn Brewery might be the people to deliver. After all, Brooklyn gave the world Sandy Koufax, Mos Def, Jay-Z, Will Eisner, and Type O Negative.
Before jumping right into my six-pack, I hit up the Brooklyn Brewery website for more details. Once there, I discovered that the brewery is more than willing to boast that “[H]undreds of pounds of pumpkins are blended into the mash of each batch.”
“Dayyyyhuuummm…” I said to myself, impressed that I was about to consume the byproduct of hundreds of pumpkins.
Initial impressions from the first beer — Pretty good. Definitely an improvement over last week’s pseudo-seasonal light beer with clever advertising. While the beer is hardly dark or heavy, I can definitely taste a lot of spice and the pumpkin notes are bashing me in the head. This seems like a beer that I can keep drinking.
And with that, I keep drinking. The second beer has gone down much more smoothly and is somehow more flavorful as well. I don’t know if my low tolerance is starting to take its toll, but I really feel like Post Road Pumpkin Ale is an excellent brew. Okay, maybe not excellent, but really good. This seems like a beer I could take sips of in between bites of apple pie – and that is exactly how I want to spend every night of autumn.
For its ability to lift my spirits, I award Post Road Pumpkin Ale a certainly respectable grade: B +
